Survivor: Gabon -- Return to Africa

Survivor Maps has learned that Survivor will be returning to Africa, this time on the continent's west coast in equatorial Gabon. Gabon is recognized as one of the wealthier and more stable African countries. French is the official language of the 1.5 million inhabitants. Reports put the filming situated in and around the villages of Nyonie and Ekwata in the Wonga Wongue Reserve.

Wonga Wongue National Park - The park has a mixture of rainforest and savannah, both seen in the image above. Elephants, gazelle, and gorilla roam the area, and pygmy tribes hunt for game.

The Ogooué River bisects Gabon. Dr. Albert Schweitzer founded his hospital on its banks at Lambaréné. The hospital is still operating, and there is a museum to Schweitzer there, too. Mary H. Kingsley's historic voyages to West Africa, introduced the Englilsh-speaking world to the region one-hundred years ago in her book Travels in West Africa

In 2002, Gabon President Bongo announced a national park system to protect certain areas from developement. Ten percent of the country is now designated a national park, up from the former one percent. The Wildlife Conservation Society assisted the country in establishing the parks and the United States gave Gabon $75 million to jump-start the new park system.
